Admit It, The Science Is Settled
We're going to have to admit it. Al Gore was right all along. Sunday night, Sep 7, things changed. It rained all night, and most of the day yesterday. Phoenix got up to 6.5 inches of rain, about equal to the total for an entire year. I lived in the desert, about 50 miles east of Phoenix, a beautiful, peaceful place. But that was in the Before Time. I woke up Monday morning to a very different world. Looks like the science is settled.

Nice. But seriously...I spent my high school years in Phoenix and can't even contemplate 6 inches of rain there. I mean, we had a couple snow flakes once, in the winter, and that was like the craziest thing ever. The sand storms that most people around the country would think is the coming of Armageddon were more normal than a couple inches of rain.
ReplyDeleteWe've been in Phoenix since 2000. Never saw it rain like that here. Sand storms I can handle. We get those a couple of times a year. I spent yesterday digging a drainage ditch so the water had somewhere to go.
DeleteThat's what I don't get. I figured such dry sandy soil would be like a giant ShamWow.
DeleteOut here where I am if you dig down about 6 inches you hit a layer of clay...the Superstitiona are just about a mile east of me. In flat areas around here it's more like you said.
DeleteI've been all over the ranges surrounding Phoenix, but honestly, I never dug too deep. The top soil is so dry, it just seemed a given that it would soak up any rain. I do remember saguaros would get really bloated and sometimes fall apart if there was a little too much rain.
DeleteEasy people, or we all might move to the Al Gore Ministries that now replaces the old Miracle Valley Whacko's in Herford, AZ. I know you all may have been in Phoenix for a few monsoons but I saw the 1983 monsoon and the 1994 monsoon in the North and South part of Arizona and it was pretty brutal. Tucson had hurricane force winds and like 5 inches in a few hours in like 1994. This happens every once in a while in this State. This is a blessing in Arizona, we need good monsoons especially with all you "transplants" in my State. Hahahahahhahahaha....(sarcastic laugh) Anyway I like the old school comic book affect of the blog..
